Summary of "The Complete 2nd Season: Limited Edition - Still a great show": I feel as though I was rewarded for putting my faith in Glen Mazzara; he certainly didn't let me down. Some people complained that the early part of the season was boring, but I didn't find that at all. I liked that they were constantly on the run, and had a chance to settle down and try to lead a "normal" life, at least for awhile. I enjoy the mental aspects of watching "survivor" shows; the group dynamics, how they're going to survive, not just from zombies, but from everything else, and what other people they'll come in contact with. Last season I didn't have "favorite" characters either, but this season I became attached to a few of them, though I won't say who.
This BD set is quite good, though I'm still bothered that there are videos on the AMC website that aren't included in this set. I really, really hope they don't choose to double-dip again in a few months by releasing a "Season 2: Special Edition" set like the did with season 1. That was pretty horrible for the fans, even though the initial set didn't cost tons of money. The featurettes found here are all under 10 minutes, yet they pack a lot of content into little time. I think it helps that each featurette is so focused, as opposed to something that's a longer piece trying to cover so many aspects of the production. The set I received was the "Limited Edition," with the BDs packed inside the zombie head. That thing wasn't too popular around my house, even though I loved it. My wife said it was too creepy, and that I had to take it to the basement, and my dog would bark and growl at it any time he saw it (yeah, I have a "zombie watchdog"). The head actually makes for a really cool special package; you jab the screwdriver into the eye socket to unlatch the hinge on the head. Open it up and the BDs are sitting there in a regular BD case. A lot of thought went into creating something that is cool to look at, is functional, and most importantly, holds a regular BD case inside.
I've been resisting reading the comics because I don't want to spoil the show, but I think I'm going to go ahead and take the plunge and crack some of these beautiful hardcover books I have sitting on my shelves. Hopefully there are enough things different that I can enjoy both of the stories, plus the Telltale game, and the upcoming Walking Dead video game based on the show, and whatever else they decide to come out with. As for season 3, I say bring it on... in a year when it's out on BD. (read entire review)
Summary of "Season 1 - Braaaaaiiiiinnnnnnsssss": I really enjoyed the show, and I'm glad I waited to watch it on BD, but I have a little rant in terms of the bonus material. There's NOTHING special about the material on this set. With the exception of "On Set with Andrew Lincoln," it's all available on AMC.com. In fact, there's tons more material that wasn't used on the set, and I find that really annoying. I want to see new material on the DVD/BD releases, stuff like commentaries, or featurettes that weren't available elsewhere. If you're going to just include web material, include all of it. Why isn't there a featurette on turning the comic book into a TV series? It's on the website. Why don't they have stills from the first issue of the comic book? It's available on the Image Comics website for free.
Complaints about the bonus material aside, I enjoyed the set. The set is only $23 (as I type this) on Amazon.com for the BD; a heck of a deal for nearly 5 hours of TV, especially quality TV. If you haven't already ordered this, you should really pick it up. My wife wouldn't watch it with me because she said it'd be too scary, but I didn't find it scary at all. Sure, there are some tense moments, but nothing that should make you jump, just feel a bit uneasy.
Now that I've seen the show I'm going to order the comics ASAP. Of course I'll have to get through a few series' I'm reading before I jump into them, but they'll look nice on my shelf until then.
P.S. The PR people behind The Walking Dead release had a lot of fun; the package that contained the set had a bloody footprint on it. It really freaked out the FedEx guy who brought it to my door (he was ready to file a report because it had been stepped on). (read entire review)
