Tomorrow's highly anticipated release of Star Trek - Season 2 on Blu-ray
won't have long to wait before getting the 3rd and final season of The Original Series in the high-def format! This morning CBS DVD and Paramount Home Entertainment announced that Star Trek - Season 3
will arrive on Blu-ray Disc this December 15th
As with previous releases in BD format, this set will have the episodes available in either the original as-aired version with '60s special effects and English mono sound, or you can watch these in their "remastered" versions with upgraded special effects and English 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. An option for Spanish mono audio is also on board, along with subtitles for English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. Video is presented in high-definition 1080p resolution, but formatted to 1.33:1 full screen as originally aired. Running time is 1350 minutes.
Guest stars during the final season included the likes of Pamelyn Ferdin (Blondie, The Paul Lynde Show, Lassie, Space Academy
), attorney Melvin Belli, Diana Muldaur (L.A. Law, Star Trek: The Next Generation
), Michael Ansara (The Ten Commandments, The Robe
), Susan Howard (Dallas, The Paper Chase
), Dick Durock (Swamp Thing
), Yvonne Craig (Batman
), Frank Gorshin (Batman
), Lee Meriwether (Batman, Barnaby Jones
) and Mariette Hartley (Peyton Place, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
Episodes this year included some notorious entries that many fans spurn, including "Spock's Brain," "The Way to Eden" and the series-ending "Turnabout Intruder." However, several notable fan favorites are also included in this final run of the original show, plus some with memorable scenes and scenarios: "The Enterprise Incident," "Day of the Dove," "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky," "The Tholian Web," "The Empath," "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield," "That Which Survives," "The Lights of Zetar" and "The Cloud Minders" (your mileage may vary, and so may your personal opinions, of course).
One thing that every fan is sure to agree on, though, is that the inclusion of "The Cage," the original cut of the original pilot episode, is highly desired on this set. It seems like that is a go, because CBS/Paramount's list of bonus material includes an item titled "Where No Fan Has Gone Before: The Restored, Unaired Alternate Pilot Episode." Here's the full list of bonus material, as provided this morning by the studio (may not be final):

Package art and pricing for the Star Trek - Season 3
Blu-ray Disc set aren't available yet, but are expected to be similar to what we've seen in the past (for the box, it should be the same design as tomorrow's Season 2
set, but red and with the arrowhead logo bearing the "tilted spiral" pattern seen on Engineering/ Operations/Security crew members, such as Scotty). Stay tuned and we'll bring you that just as soon as we can.
Note that on the same street date, CBS/Paramount will also release a "complete series" bundle which takes all three seasons on Blu-ray, and shrink-wraps them together into a "brick" with no special pricing, content or packaging...just as a convenient way to pick up everything at once. It's possible that the studio will make a much fancier complete set down the line, but no guarantees just yet. We'll let you know if we hear anything!
The studio has just provided us with a picture of the packaging for this release, and it turns out to be exactly as we described above:
