'90s cartoons clash in this Canada-only release

It's been almost three years since fans of the '90s "Fox Kids" Spider-Man animated series saw a DVD release, and closer to five years since the X-Men cartoon from the same era got treated to any discs. Now it seems two birds are sort-of going to be killed with one stone...but to get it, you'll have to go north.

Morningstar Entertainment, a Toronto-based company, has announced that on May 6th they will release Spider-Man - The Mutant Agenda. Fans of the show may remember the titular episode: "The Mutant Agenda" was part of the story arc referred to as "Neogenic Nightmare", which features Spidey/Peter undergoing a new mutation that at first robs him of his powers, and later on begins to sicken him. Morningstar's description takes it from there:
Spider-Man's progressing neogenic mutation is making him ill, and he seeks the aid of a man known to help all mutants...Dr. Charles Xavier. In doing so he meets the X-Men, but is disappointed to learn that Xavier does not 'cure' mutancy, only helps those born that way to accept and control their abilities.

In the process of this endeavor though, he becomes involved in a plot to destroy mutants everywhere. Will he be able to stop this hideous plan with the help of the X-Men?
As Morningstar's trade ad (pictured below) says, the entire regular voice cast of the X-Men animated series (which was produced in Canada) was flown to Los Angeles to record the episode "The Mutant Agenda" as well as the next installment, "Mutants' Revenge". There's no definite word in Morningstar's announcement about whether the second half of the story will be included in this release. Hopefully they won't leave us hanging!

The regular voice cast of both shows, which include Edward Asner (The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Lou Grant) as "J. Jonah Jameson", are supplemented in these episodes by Mark Hamill (Hobgoblin),Roscoe Lee Browne (Kingpin) and Maxwell Caulfield (Alistair Smythe).

Additionally, to celebrate the arrival of the new Ironman film in theaters just a few days prior to this release, Morningstar is including a pair of bonus episodes of Spider-Man where Tony Stark/Ironman (voiced by Robert Hays of the Airplane! movies) pays a visit. There were six such episodes, so we're not sure which two are included on this disc since Morningstar did not immediately name them.

Total running time is listed as 95 minutes. Cost is CA$14.98 SRP, but you can pre-order it from Amazon.ca for CA$10.49 as of this writing. There is no word yet of an American release for this title, but USA residents who import it will have no difficulty playing it in any standard Region 1 DVD player (which is the common one you get at the store). Hi-res box art isn't available yet, but we've got a small look at it for you in the trade ad picture below:
