Last week we passed along to our readers that Amazon.com was already taking early pre-orders for both DVD
and Blu-ray Disc
versions of Smallville - The Complete 7th Season
...and with Warner Home Video's blessings, as far as we could tell. In fact, on the second day, Amazon provided cover art
for the DVD version of the set, at their listing.
As of this writing, the listings are both still there, but aren't currently taking pre-orders. We predict, though, that the order-taking will begin again very soon: this morning Warner made it official, and formally announced the release of the 7th Season on both DVD and Blu-ray Disc!
The release date turns out to be September 9th
for both formats. Amazon's earlier info (not currently there) about pricing turned out to be 100% accurate: $59.98 SRP for the DVD edition, and $79.98 SRP for the Blu-ray. Running time is 900 minutes on both. The standard DVD release is listed as a 6-disc set, while the high-definition Blu-ray Disc version is shown to be a 3-disc set, with a mix of "BD-25" single-layer discs and "BD-50" dual-layer discs. Yeah, that sounds kinda wacky to us, too.
Complete specs for the video and audio formats aren't listed in detail so far, but rest assured that both will have anamorphic widescreen transfers (1080p on the hi-def Blu-ray version), and soundtracks with at least English - Dolby Surround 5.1 (perhaps better in the Blu-ray's case, but if so then they don't say yet). You'll have a lot of subtitle choices on both: English, Spanish, French, Korean, Portuguese and Chinese.
Bonus material will include a "Supergirl" Featurette about Kara (Laura Vandervoort), a "Jimmy on Jimmy" Featurette, and the "Smallville Legends
" Mobisodes (in case you don't know the term: a "mobisode" is like a webisode, but targeted for mobile phones as well as the internet). Back in April we passed along a report
that commentary tracks were being recorded for the 7th Season set, but Warner's info this morning makes no mention of any being included on either the DVD or Blu-ray format versions.
That's all the info the studio has for us so far, but they also did provide us with our first look at the Blu-ray Disc package art, and a finalized hi-res look at the DVD box art as well:
