Lately a large number of documentaries related to Jim Henson's work have seemingly come out of the woodwork, and over onto DVD. Now Lionsgate has found another one, which includes behind-the-scenes info not only about
The Muppet Show, but also
Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, several of the Jim Henson-related films, and even his pre-
Sesame work on commercials and other productions. This hour-long 1984 documentary, which aired on PBS, is titled "
Henson's Place: The Man Behind the Muppets."
Lionsgate's info for retailers notes that this "is the first-ever documentary to tell the story of Jim Henson," and that it "spans the career of Jim Henson and the Muppets, starting from inception up to his planning of
LABYRINTH." The show "includes in-depth clips and interviews depicting his early fascination with puppetry and visual media, his wife Jane Henson, fellow puppeteers and more." It will be released on DVD in North America for the first time ever on
August 3rd, at $14.98 for this single-disc (52 minutes) title. The video is full screen, audio is English 2.0 with closed captioning, and subtitles in English and Spanish. Here's the package art that Lionsgate provided to retailers this morning:
