The Digital Bits has posted their 7th Annual selection of the best and worst of the DVD releases for the previous year...the 2005 selections for The Bitsy Awards. This year the theme was "The Big Lebitsy", based on
The Big Lebowski film. Bill Hunt and the staff at The Bits very kindly asked Gord and I for input in the category of "Best DVD: TV Series Presentation. The winner was
Lost - The Complete 1st Season:
The cult phenomenon Lost shows how to do TV on DVD right with its freshman set, a beautifully produced package with top-notch picture and sound and a boatload (or maybe a planeload) of terrific bonus features. Even the menus on this set are great. Like 24 before it, Lost is a series that was made to be watched on DVD. Unlike the continuing adventures of Jack Bauer, however, Lost also demands to be re-watched again and again. This first season set makes it a pleasure, whether you're watching it for the 4th time, the 8th time, the 15th time, the 16th time, the 23rd time, or the 42nd time.
Runner-ups included
Battlestar Galactica, Enterprise, Deadwood and
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Honorable mentions included continuing releases of
Seinfeld, The Twilight Zone and
The Simpsons. For the complete story, and to see info about other winners in non-TV categories,
read the article at The Digital Bits. Below you'll see a "compressed" representation of The Bitsy Awards' Best TV Series screens.
Lost also won an award for Best DVD Easter Egg, which you'll find further down on the page at that same link. What TV-DVDs ended up with the dubious honor of "Worst" winners? The folks at The Digital Bits made the decisions in
this category by themselves, but we heartily agree with their reasons for including titles like
Speed Racer - Volume 3 and
Tom and Jerry: Spotlight Collection - Volume 1. It's hard to argue with the reasons for their inclusion of
The Muppet Show: Season One and
Beavis and Butt-Head: The Mike Judge Collection - Volume 1 as well. Our thanks to Bill and the rest of the staff over there for thinking of us and asking us to participate...we enjoyed doing it, and hope to do so again in the future!
