Gunsmoke - Whoa! Awesome Wood-Looking Box For 50th Anniversary Collection, & Final List of Extras

In late September (just over a month ago), we brought you news and artwork for a pair of Gunsmoke DVD sets (3 discs each) that are meant to help celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the show. The next day we related about how CBS and Paramount also planned to combine the two sets into a single 6-DVD set called Gunsmoke - 50th Anniversary Collection. Like the separate releases, this compilation will be out on January 3rd.

The SRP is $65.95, for 29 episodes. Remember, the show aired from 1955 to 1975, and starting in the 1961 season it went from a half-hour show to an hour-long show, and in 1966 it made the leap from black-and-white to color...so expect this best-of collection to have a bit of everything in it! Paul Brownstein, award-winning producer of The Dick Van Dyke Show DVDs, has produced this set that is just bursting with extras. Here is the final list of bonus material you'll find:
  • Special episode introducitons by James Arness
  • Special introduction by John Wayne on series premiere episode "Matt Gets It"
  • Blooper and Gag Reels
  • Rare Home Movies filmed on the set by Dennis Weaver
  • Audio Commentaries by James Arness, Dennis Weaver, Angie Dickinson, George Kennedy, Barbara Eden, Adam West, Ed Asner, Bruce Dern and Buck Taylor
  • James Arness as Matt Dillon and Dennis Weaver as Chester on The Ed Sullivan Show
  • Amanda Blake on The Mike Douglas Show and The David Frost Show
  • Western Channel Gunsmoke Memories
  • Museum of TV & Radio Q&A with Cast
  • Emmy Award footage
  • Original CBS network promos
  • Photo Galleries

That's a very nice list of commentary participants; the only really made-it-big name missing from among the living main cast is Burt Reynolds, who played "Quint Asper" from 1962-65. We're grateful for all the other big names who came by, including the one-time guest stars. Dickinson's commentary will no doubt be on the 2nd Season's "Sins of the Fathers," West's will be on Season 8's "Ash Wednesday," and Eden's will surely be on the 3rd Season's "Romeo". Other guest stars who are doing commentaries - like Asner, Dern and Kennedy - played different characters in different episodes, usually in different seasons.

As we mention in the headline for this story, the box art for the 6-disc set is very attractive looking...at least I think so, based on these pictures:
