A week ago Stephen Bowie at the Classic TV History Blog filed a report
about how he had "been informed by a reliable source that The Goldbergs, the Jewish family comedy first telecast from 1949-1956, will be coming to DVD in a big way in early 2010.
" A previous 2-disc release of the show, from Timeless Media Group in April 2008, only contained 10 episodes; this will be a much bigger effort! Bowie goes on to explain how this new release "will gather all of the surviving kinescopes from the series’ various incarnations...as well as all thirty-nine segments shot on film for the show’s last season.
" In other words, all the surviving episodes will be included on this set (Bowie's write-up says that the count will come to "over sixty episodes").
Our thanks to reader Graeme Edgeler for the heads-up about the above report. That entry didn't give any specific information about which studio will be releasing it; the only clue was that it would be "compiled by a well-known DVD producer and distributed by another label that specializes in classic television
." The initial thought was that it could be Timeless Media again, but the very next day there was an interesting exchange
on this topic at the Shout! Factory official message boards, so we've followed up with that studio. Today we were given our answer!
Shout! Factory is preparing a series of Direct To Consumer releases in 2010, similar to their earlier direct offerings of the collectible complete-series releases for the original G.I. Joe
and The Transformers
classic animated programs. Like those titles, these ARE going to be factory-produced sets, and will NOT be manufacture-on-demand titles. Unlike those titles, however, the new slate of offerings will concentrate on shows that have much smaller fan bases, and for which most major retailers have resisted carrying any follow-up DVD releases. Rather than give up on shows like Ironside, Mr. Belvedere, Room 222, My Two Dads, The Bill Cosby Show
and The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog
, Shout! has elected to sell them directly to the fans themselves. Today you'll see separate news postings for each of these (some more in-depth than others).
At the same time Shout! is also doing a brand-new title for their company, and it is indeed The Goldbergs - The Complete Series
(well, as "complete" as possible, per the Classic TV History Blog's description above). They won't go into details just yet, as everything hasn't been finalized. So we don't have a price, or exact contents, or package art, or even a specific availability date. But we do know it will be a 6-DVD set that will be offered some time in "Early 2010
." Stay tuned, and we'll bring you updates as further developments occur!
