The Doctors embark on their greatest adventure in this 50th Anniversary Special. In 2013, something terrible is awakening in London's National Gallery, in 1562, a murderous plot is afoot in Elizabethan England, and somewhere in space an ancient battle reaches its devastating conclusion. All of reality is at stake as the Doctor's own dangerous past comes back to haunt him.
Two months ago we reported
about Doctor Who - The Day of the Doctor: 50th Anniversary Special
, which airs around the world a week from tomorrow, on November 23rd...fifty years after "An Unearthly Child" was first broadcast. We passed on about how this title from BBC Home Entertainment will come to DVD and high-def Blu-ray Disc in North America on December 10th
, just two-and-a-half-weeks after it shows on television!
This 77-minute special will even be shown in select theaters
, in 3D, on Monday November 25th. And, along those lines, the Blu-ray release will be a combo set with Blu-ray, DVD and 3D Blu-ray all together in one package, for $29.98 SRP..just $5 more than the $24.98 SRP DVD-only version. Fantastic!
At the time of that initial report, though, we didn't have a complete list of bonus material which will be included on this title. Now though, the U.S./Canadian distributor, Warner Home Video, has provided a more extensive list of the extras you'll find on board. Here's what they show:
- Doctor Who Explained - The entire 50-year history in one hilarious 50-minute special!
- 2x Mini-Episodes
- Behind the Scenes
So what exactly are these 2 "Mini-Episodes" (or "minisodes," as many prefer to term them)? According to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), one of them
is a 4-minute piece called "Last Day," a segment which we don't know anything else about. But we suppose it COULD be a sort of bookend to the other one. We're merely speculating, however!
The other minisode is undoubtedly the one which the BBC put out on the internet yesterday: "The Night of the Doctor" is the official prequel to the upcoming 50th Anniversary Special, The Day of the Doctor
. This special minisode is formally described this way: "The 50th Anniversary features Matt Smith, David Tennant and a mysterious incarnation played by John Hurt. Only one Doctor appears in the mini episode, 'The Night of the Doctor.' But which?
" Although not confirmed with the BBC, we are certain that this item will be included on the DVDs and Blu-rays, because it's the perfect lead-in to the coming special.
See for yourself! Below we have the Amazon.com button link to pre-order Doctor Who - The Day of the Doctor: 50th Anniversary Special
on DVD or as a Blu-ray/3D/DVD Combo set. Under that we've embedded the BBC's own YouTube post for "The Night of the Doctor," followed by package art from the two North American versions of The Day of the Doctor
. Underneath those images, at the bottom, is the 1-minute-20-second "long version" trailer the BBC has posted on YouTube for The Day of the Doctor
...it contains preview scenes which many fans have already called "spoilerish" (although only in a very minor way, if you ask me), so be warned about that if you prefer to go into your viewing of the special with as little information as possible. Whether you watch that or not, it's coming in 8 days. #SaveTheDay
