A month-and-a-half ago, StarVista Entertainment (which is the company name that Time-Life Entertainment is in the process of switching over to) released China Beach - The Complete Series
as a 21-DVD set, sold directly from their website
. I'll editorialize here a moment and say it is a fantastic package, and an incredible show that is very well done on DVD. I'm on the third season myself, and I'm enjoying it more than I can describe. If you're a fan of this show and you haven't bought this yet, then I can highly recommend it. If you haven't seen this show...well, see it. I'll go so far as to say that if you're a fan of M*A*S*H
and haven't seen China Beach
yet, then you ought to!
But if you're a fan of the show that made Dana Delany (Body of Proof
) a breakout star - and which also included great performances from Marg Helgenberger (CSI
), Michael Boatman (Spin City
) and Robert Picardo (Star Trek: Voyager
) - and cannot afford the big 4-season Complete Series
set, then StarVista is working on a solution for you! Amazon.com has added a new pre-order listing
for China Beach - Season 1
on DVD! It's shown to be coming out on October 1st
, with a $22.95 SRP list price. Amazon's listing currently shows the studio name as "Wea-Des Moines Video" (which is the way the big e-tailer often lists the Warner Music Group and their subsidiaries, such as Rhino), but from what we've discerned the actual studio will be StarVista Entertainment.
Below is a look at the Season 1
box art as seen inside of the Complete Series
packaging. We're unsure if that will be reused exactly as-is (or at all, for that matter!) in a separate season set release, however. And as far as contents will go, in that big collection the first season disc case includes 3 DVDs: two that have the pilot telefilm and the six regular weekly episodes which make up Season 1
(and which included Sid and Nancy
star Chloe Webb as "Laurette" all throughout), and a third disc with Bonus Features. Since the studio has not yet formally announced this title, we're uncertain if the general release version of the short First Season will have all the same contents, or if the extras might possibly be only for the big online set. We'll try to find out. Stay tuned and we'll try to bring you updates about this new item, as further developments occur! Our thanks to one of our readers, "Emmy," for pointing out this item to us overnight.
Shortly after we posted this story, the Amazon listing has been pulled entirely. It is probably due to the fact that there is no formal announcement yet for this item, so the Amazon listing might possibly have just been premature. More than likely you should expect the link to become active again shortly after StarVista makes this item official.
