Civil War veteran Sam Best (Joel Higgins, "Silver Spoons") heads west in 1865 along with his Southern-belle wife Elvira (Carlene Watkins, "Dear John") and smart-mouthed son Daniel (Meeno Peluce, "Voyagers"), where he ends up being the town marshal after accidentally scaring off an incompetent gunfighter, The Calico Kid (Christopher Lloyd, "Back to the Future"). The two-season sitcom, which aired on ABC beginning in September 1981, also stars Leonard Frey (Fiddler on the Roof), Tom Ewell (The Seven Year Itch) and Tracey Walter ("Reno 911," "Nash Bridges").
Amazon's CreateSpace MOD (manufacture on demand) program has begun taking pre-orders for "Best of the West - The Complete Series" on DVD. The 1981 show ran on ABC for 22 episodes. The studio description, quoted above, calls it a "two-season sitcom," but most people consider it a single-season show which simply had the final 3 episodes delayed and shown by the network during the summer, 3 or 4 months after the network had removed it from their main schedule.
It became a cult favorite, however, and fans have been waiting a long time to get it on DVD. Now it's in-the-works from CBS/Paramount, but no date has been set so far: Amazon's listing merely says, "This title has not yet been released. You may pre-order it now and we will deliver it to you when it arrives.
" Price is shown as $34.99 SRP for a 3-disc set, however, and here's the cover art and an Amazon pre-order button link:
