Alice - An Image Shows 'The Complete 5th Season' DVDs Are In-The-Works!

The Warner Archive displays package art demonstrating that it's on the way

Starting in 1976, CBS aired Alice, the show famous for "Mel's Diner" and waitress Flo's inevitable comeback, "kiss my grits!" Starring Linda Lavin as the title character, Vic Tayback as "Mel," Beth Howland as the dingbat waitress "Vera," and Philip McKeon as Alice's son, "Tommy," the sitcom lasted for 9 seasons.

The TV show was based on a 1974 theatrical film, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, directed by Martin Scorsese. In the movie, Ellen Burstyn played "Alice," Alfred Lutter played "Tommy" (he would play the same role in the TV show's pilot, but then was replaced by McKeon), Tayback played "Mel" (reprising the role throughout the entire run of the TV comedy), and Diane Ladd played "Flo." On television, Polly Holliday played "Flo" until the fourth season, before getting her character spun off into her own short-lived TV series. To replace her, the sitcom brought in Diane Ladd as a new character, "Belle," who stayed for the rest of the 4th season, and was in the 5th season until there were 4 episodes left. When Ladd departed, she was replaced with Celia Weston as "Jolene," who stayed through the rest of the show's run.

In 2012 and 2013, the Warner Archive Collection released the first 4 seasons of Alice on DVD, as manufacture-on-demand (MOD) titles available online from sellers such as the studio's own, and Amazon's CreateSpace MOD program. Fans (myself included!) have eagerly awaited more season sets..and now they are in-the-works!

Yesterday, the Warner Archive made posts on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter that showed the below box-art image of Alice - The Complete 5th Season, covered with a group photo of Alice, Mel, Belle, and Vera. There's no date, no cost, not anything else. Just a caption that asks, "Chez wha?" But clearly this long-awaited title is on the way soon. Our thanks to regular reader Jackson Burnett for being the first (of several people!) to email us about this, and make sure we were aware of it. Stay tuned, of course, and we'll update you as further info becomes available!
