This morning we were VERY pleased to
break the news that
Laverne & Shirley - The 5th Season was coming to DVD at last, on
April 10th. Now one of our friends in the home video retail industry has forwarded us information from Paramount Home Entertainment which gives all the details about extras on this 4-disc set!
When the fifth season of
Laverne & Shirley debuted on Thursday, September 13, 1979, it was just two days after the premiere of the seventh season of
Happy Days. Since that was the program
Laverne & Shirley was originally spun off from, and both took place in Milwaukee in the same era, there were various cross-over episodes in the histories of these two series. On Tuesday of that week,
Happy Days debuted their new season with the episode "Shotgun Wedding," with the final guest appearances on that show of Penny Marshall as "Laverne" and Cindy Williams as "Shirley."
As we mentioned in our earlier story, two members of the cast of
Happy Days visited
Laverne & Shirley as well during
The 5th Season: Ron Howard's "Richie" and Henry Winkler's "Fonzie" appeared in the other show's season debut, "Shotgun Wedding Part 2": when the boys are caught kissing a couple of farmer's daughter, the farmer tries to get Richie and Fonzie to marry the girls...and it's up to Laverne and Shirley to rescue them by posing as their wives!
How can one part of this story be told without the other part? Well, an alternate ending for the
Happy Days episode exists for syndicated reruns, and we hope both versions appear on any eventual DVD release of
Happy Days - The 7th Season (and we WISH we had good news for you that such a title could be expected, but we TRULY have low expectations there due to all the music licensing issues; sorry).
In the meantime, we're pleased to pass on word from our retail sources, who tell us that the bonus material found on
Laverne & Shirley - The 5th Season DVD set will include ALL Episode Promos, PLUS the bonus episode from
Happy Days of the first part of "Shotgun Wedding." Hooray, CBS/Paramount! That's excellent news indeed, and we're glad to share it with all of you. AND to share this Amazon pre-order link, too!
We've also been asked about whether there are any music changes on this title. We don't know one way or another about that situation, at this time. If we find out anything we will let you know!
