Battlestar Galactica - Studio Tells Registered Complete Series Owners About a Package Trade-In Program **UPDATE: 'Face of the Enemy' Webisodes Answer**

Owners of the 'limited edition' release can change to the shelf-friendly box, if desired

Posted by David Lambert
At the end of last week Universal announced that on April 6th they are releasing new repackaged versions of Battlestar Galactica - The Complete Series on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. With lower list prices than the previous limited edition packages, these come in standard shelf-friendly cases and outer slip boxes. They've also added the post-series production, Battlestar Galactica - The Plan, to the contents in the unrated, extended feature-length version of that telefilm.

Many fans have asked us whether the other major item missing from the previous "complete" release, the "Face of the Enemy" webisodes, would also be added to these new releases. We've asked the studio about this, of course, but haven't gotten a response so far. We're also still waiting on pictures of the new package art, and we'll bring that to you just as soon as we can. In the meantime, one of our readers, Robert Lowndes, has filled us in about another aspect of the packaging: a trade-in program! Robert registered his previous purchase of the limited edition version "complete" set, and as a result the studio's consumer relations department sent him the following e-mail:
Dear "Battlestar Galactica (2004): The Complete Series" Owner,

We are happy to announce that new packaging is available for your "Battlestar Galactica (2004): The Complete Series" set. The new packaging is comprised of conventional cases regularly used to store DVD or Blu-ray discs. Please note that we support consumers with U.S. mailing addresses only.

To receive new packaging, please remove the top and triangular flap of the Season One case included in your complete series set and send it to us, along with the following information and a copy of this correspondence:

    Your name:
    Street address or P.O. Box:
    Format: BLU-RAY __________ DVD ____________

    Send to:

    Universal Studios Home Entertainment
    c/o Deluxe Media Management
    P. O. Box 801464
    Valencia, CA 91380 - 1464

Please allow 4 to 6 weeks to receive the new packaging.

We hope that you will continue to enjoy "Battlestar Galactica" and future Universal releases.

    Consumer Relations
Fascinating! Our thanks to Robert Lowndes for passing this along to us. We're not absolutely certain that Universal will honor this trade-in program for consumers who haven't registered their previous purchase with the studio, though (especially since no payment seems to be required), so this is entirely at your own risk. We're happy to pass along this info though, to anyone who wants to give it a try! (CLARIFICATION: We've had a number of readers ask us what method Robert specifically used to "register" his copy in order to get the above e-mail about this program. He tells us this: "I used the first disc of season 1 and selected the BD-live and registered. I believe that when you do it thru the blu-ray player, Universal knows what disc it is. " ADDITION: if you're unable to register, then you can e-mail and tell them you're interested in the package exchange; they will reply with the instructions.)

UPDATE: Trade journal Home Media Magazine has gotten the answer to the question about the "Face of the Enemy" webisodes. In a story posted a bit earlier, the magazine's assistant managing editor John Latchem reports that Universal informs that these installments are NOT included on the repackaged Complete Series sets. Furthermore, John passes along that "a studio rep indicated there were no plans to release them on disc any time soon," pointing instead to their online availability. No reason was given for leaving this off of the discs (again).

Our thanks to John for sending us the heads-up about this (and for pointing his own readers to our story here about the trade-in program). However, we join tons of fans in being quite disappointed in this webisode series being the only part of the overall Battlestar Galactica production left off of these releases. To quote many of our readers, it seems "ridiculous" to omit this from the home video discs.
