A bit over a month ago, we
were reporting that show creator Bryan Fuller had spoken out publicly, saying he just wasn't sure when
Pushing Daisies - The Complete 2nd Season would come to DVD "
because it's contingent on when/if ABC airs [the final three episodes]." Fuller went on to explain that the DVDs couldn't come out until the network aired those episodes, and that ABC's rights to air them extended through September. With that info, we certainly were starting to think "end of year" before the home videos came about.
But we're not fooling around, despite today's date, when we say that Warner Home Video has settled our nerves this morning by officially announcing that
Pushing Daisies - The Complete 2nd Season will come to DVD and high definition Blu-ray Disc on
July 21st (surprisingly, that's many weeks after the early-June theatrical debut of Anna Friel's new film, the
Land of the Lost remake). You'll get 13 episodes with an official back-of-the-box running time of 562 minutes: "Bzzzzzzzzz!," "Circus Circus," "Bad Habits," "Frescorts," "Dim Sum Lose Some," "Oh Oh Oh, Its Magic," "Robbing Hood," "Comfort Food," "Lighthouse," "The Norwegians," "Window Dressed to Kill," "Water & Power" and "Kerplunk".
Bonus material includes an "Easy as Pie" Featurette, presented as an on-screen Pop-Up book, narrated by Jim Dale. Warner Video describes it this way:
"Easy as Pie" will feature photos and supplementary material, while Jim's narration will inform us with all manner of behind-the-scenes tid-bits! This is the info that was provided about special features in the studio's retailer listings this morning, for both the DVD and Blu-ray. On the other hand, rear box art for both versions (seen below) shows that the Special Features include these Featurettes: "The Master Pie Maker: Inside the Mind of Creator Bryan Fuller," "From Oven to Table: Crafting a Script Idea Into Reality," "Super Sweet Ingredients: Spotlight on Composer Jim Dooley's Work" and "Add a Little Magic: Executing Some Giant-Sized Visual Effects".
The DVD release comes on 4 discs costing $39.98 SRP. Video is "matted" letterbox widescreen, with audio available in both English Dolby Surround 5.1 and Portuguese Stereo 2.0. There are subtitles in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Chinese and Thai. The Blu-ray Disc format version comes on 2 "BD-50" discs costing $49.99 SRP. Video is high-definition 1080p widescreen with audio in English Dolby Surround 5.1, and subtitles in English and French. A studio description of the set is just below. Following that is front and rear package art for the DVD release, then front and rear packaging for the Blu-ray version.
UPDATE (4/2): We've just posted
the official studio press release (including links to pre-order both versions from Amazon.com), so be sure to read that as well.
This forensic fairytale follows Ned, a young man with a very special gift. As a boy, Ned discovered that he could return the dead briefly back to life with just one touch. Now a pie maker, Ned puts his ability to good use, not only touching dead fruit and making it ripe with everlasting flavor, but working with a private investigator to crack murder cases by raising the dead and getting them to name their killers. But the tale gets complicated when Ned brings his childhood sweetheart, Chuck, back from the dead -- and keeps her alive. Chuck becomes the third partner in Ned and Emerson's private-investigation enterprise, encouraging them to use Ned's skills for good, not just for profit. Life would be perfect for Ned and Chuck, except for one cruel twist: If he ever touches her again, she'll go back to being dead, this time for good.
